Henna Powder & Indigo Powder
Create rich, naturally dark hair tones with the Mara Organics Organic Henna & Indigo Hair Colour Kit—a plant-based alternative for anyone who prefers to colour their hair without conventional synthetic dyes. Henna provides the warm red-brown foundation, while indigo layers over it to create progressively deeper brown-to-black tones. For the richest natural black and improved grey coverage, we recommend our updated two-step process: first apply a henna-and-indigo blend, then follow with a fresh indigo application. Because these are genuine plant powders, final colour develops gradually and can vary depending on your starting hair colour, percentage of grey hair, processing time and previous treatments. Repeated applications can help deepen and enrich the resulting colour over time.
Ingredients
- Organic Henna Powder: Pure plant-based henna hair colouring powder.
- Organic Indigo Powder: Pure plant-based indigo hair colouring powder.
- Available Kit Sizes: 100 g Henna + 100 g Indigo OR 250 g Henna + 250 g Indigo.
Hair Care
- Natural Hair Colour: Henna and indigo work together to create plant-based brown, dark brown and black hair tones without conventional oxidative hair dyes.
- Grey Coverage: The two-step method helps build deeper colour on grey and white strands, which may require more than one application for richer coverage.
- Richer Black Tones: Repeated henna and indigo applications can gradually deepen and enrich the appearance of dark hair colour.
- Fuller-Looking Hair: Plant dye powders coat the hair shaft, which can leave hair feeling thicker, fuller and more substantial.
- Natural Shine: Many users find that henna-based colouring leaves the hair looking glossy and well conditioned after rinsing and settling.
- Colour Builds Over Time: Final results depend on your natural hair colour, grey percentage, previous colour treatments and application technique.

- Two-step method helps improve colour depth and grey coverage.
- Colour can become richer with repeated applications.
- May leave hair feeling thicker, fuller and more manageable.

How to Use
- Before You Begin: Wear gloves and protect clothing, towels and surrounding surfaces because henna and indigo can stain.
- Step 1 – Prepare the Henna: Place approximately 2–6 tablespoons of henna powder into a bowl, depending on your hair length and thickness.
- Add Water: Gradually mix with warm water until a smooth paste forms.
- Henna Dye Release: Allow the henna paste to rest for approximately 2–3 hours.
- Adjust Consistency: After dye release, add more water if necessary until the paste has a smooth yoghurt-like consistency—not too thick and not too runny.
- Prepare Indigo Separately: In another bowl, mix approximately 2–6 tablespoons of indigo powder with warm water.
- Indigo Dye Release: Allow the indigo paste to rest for approximately 15–20 minutes. Indigo should be prepared shortly before use because its colouring ability reduces as the mixed paste oxidises.
- Combine the Pastes: Mix equal amounts of prepared henna paste and indigo paste together using approximately a 50:50 ratio.
- Apply the Combined Paste: Divide clean, damp or dry hair into sections. Apply generously from front to back, working thoroughly through the hair from roots to ends.
- Processing Time: Leave the henna-and-indigo mixture on the hair for approximately 2–3 hours.
- Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with water. At this stage, the hair may appear brownish, while grey strands may show warmer brown or reddish-maroon tones.
- Step 2 – Prepare Fresh Indigo: Mix a new batch of indigo powder with warm water using the same method above and allow it to rest for approximately 15–20 minutes.
- Apply Indigo: Apply the fresh indigo paste generously throughout the hair, concentrating especially on grey, white or lighter strands where deeper colour is desired.
- Second Processing Time: Leave the indigo paste on for approximately 2–3 hours.
- Final Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with water. The colour may continue to deepen and settle after rinsing.
- For Richer Results: Additional applications may gradually create deeper, more even-looking black tones, particularly on resistant grey hair.
- Important: Do not prepare indigo many hours in advance. Unlike henna, freshly mixed indigo should be used relatively soon after preparation.

Storage & Safety
- For external hair use only.
- Always perform a patch test before full application, even when using botanical hair colour.
- Perform a strand test first to preview the likely colour result, particularly on grey, bleached, chemically treated or previously coloured hair.
- Avoid direct contact with the eyes. Rinse immediately with plenty of clean water if contact occurs.
- Avoid inhaling the fine powder while measuring or mixing.
- Wear gloves during preparation and application to prevent staining of the hands and nails.
- Protect clothing, towels, floors and surrounding surfaces because both powders may stain.
- Do not use products marketed as “black henna” if they contain PPD or unidentified synthetic colourants. This kit is intended for use with genuine henna and indigo plant powders.
- Results vary according to natural hair colour, hair porosity, percentage of grey, previous treatments and processing time.
- Grey or resistant hair may require more than one colouring session to achieve a deeper black result.
- Store the dry powders tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Keep wet utensils and water out of the powder containers.
- Keep out of reach of children.
